Folks;

thought I may some pics of my "big guy" to those who are interested in Gasser's.

It's an Airstar International (ASI) Gasser; uses a Zenoah RC260 engine; carbon 820mm main blades; 120mm carbon tail blades; two-stage gearbox; CNC Aluminum tail rotor housing, rotor head with aluminum centre; CNC Aluminum blade holders and 25 mm Ø aluminium tail boom....just to name some features. And yes, the big guy is heavy; almost 12pounds - however fly's rock stable; an ideal ship as training or scale platform.

Electronics - I'm using my "conventional" 7 channel Hitec radio; Futaba 9550 on the swashplate and the engine; Futaba GY-401 Gyro; dual NiCd 2400mAh batteries for the receiver (...a onboard generator is on my "to do list"); a Vario dual battery bridge and a HeliSpeedControl (to be installed; the unit is already on my desk).

Over time I will show how the heli progresses and being updated. At the same time would like to invite those having an ASI Evolution to share your pictures too. I hope I'm not the only one... Hmm?

Cheers - Surri

Folks;

Here some more pictures of my Evolution. I'm currently adding the HeliSpeedControl unit (http://www.helispeedcontrol.bnet.at/); a specific head speed control unit for Gasser's, which also includes logging capability for engine / voltage parameters. The baseline installation is done, the system works and USB connection could be successfully established. What is missing is the positioning of the magnet pickup, the engine cylinder head temperature, exhaust gas temperature (a future add-on) and the status light.

Hope you enjoy it....

Cheers - Surri

Just ordered a Gasser Gator from www.gasserman.com to pick up the engine rpm for my HSC (HeliSpeedControl). Installation is easy; pull the kill switch (not used as the engine being stopped by closing the carburetor) and connect the Gasser Gator. The output of the Gasser Gator is fully compatible with most of the major speed controllers (e.g. GV-1), but also the HSC.

Also received in the meantime a heat sink compound (thanks to P&WC) to install the cylinder head temperature sensor.

There is work to do....

Progress update - the HSC installation is by now complete as well as configuration done. There are two configuration issues to be addressed, so I hope to get an answer from KH soon.

The it will be time for a check flight  laughing

Here is a Picture of the magnet sensor installation.

I have sent the config files to KH; he is checking and I await feedback.

Now this can be called  Angry

I did not got the HSC to work properly; had a lot of interference with the receiver and never was able to get a "stable" USB connection. So enough is enough...un-installed. I do not blame KH, I was just unable to make it work.

Now like in the "real" world, managing the headspeed is the pilot's discretion.

Test safely Wink, oh, and whats that on the carb intake, is it a filter, and does it have a choke ?

Sats;

Yes this is a Mizar fuselage on an ASI. The ASI is very similar to Vario, but all aluminium.

Yes, this is the Carb filter going through the fuse. This has two advantages - filter air (obvious) and prevents that warm (hot) air from inside the fuselage is feed to the carburetor. Warm / Hot air would completely upset the engine (Zenoah 260RC) settings.

Yes, the engine has a chocke and can be operated from underneath.

Interesting day today...a lot of flying, actually over one hour (!) during three stints. The last one was remarkable however.....I lost a the left hand side of my landing skid  Sad   So with one side fine and the other missing, a landing would have been destroying...tail blades probably gone and maybe also main blades would have had ground contact. So my flying buddies at the field - while I was calming down - were looking for something which would fit underneath the gear to compensate for the missing skid. They found something....now it was up to me to land the heli very precise. Glad I had no worries about fuel (half tank full = 15 minutes of flying time)....tried several time to do the precision landing...dam that wind, didn't realised it was that strong....again, new approach - go around; next attempt and ...on the spot. Hit Idle switch and spool down rotor....all fine; the heli stud on the wood block on one side and on the [remaining] skid on the other side. All fine....now the gear gets a modification with bolts to assure this not happening again. Lesson learned....

Cheers - Surri
